Why are the Olympic Games in China?

I have tried to remain optimistic about the Olympic games being held in Beijing, China. Despite their repeated human rights violations, the policy towards Tibet, the horrible oversght on manufacturing quality in their exportable goods (melamine [poison] in the dog food, contaminated heparin, etc…). I had hoped that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) knew what they were doing when they decided to have the games there.

The promises of unrestricted web access to reporters and to clean up the air quality may not have been as sincere as we had hoped. It appears the IOC has made a deal with china that allows internet censorship after all, and the air quality reports are mixed at best.

49-way analog joysticks with MAME

Monkey DonkeyThere is no substitute for using a 4-way joystick on older 4-way games like Pacman or Donkey Kong. But here is a substitute that might help until you get a real 4-way joystick for MAME.

This works with my MAME + MAMEUI setup and it probably works with every modern MAME version and setup, but I can’t be bothered to check at the moment…

Sadly, this only works with analog (49-way) joysticks, I have an X-Arcade Tankstick and I have been thinking of replacing the joysticks with Ultimarc Mag-Stik or Mag-Stik Plus joysticks so I can switch between 4 and 8 way settings easier (at the moment I have to take the bottom off the controller to switch).

Download 49-way joystick configuration files (9.3 KB).

MAME ctrlr .cfg for Pelican Arcade Sticks

King of FightersI made a MAME ctrlr file (more info about the MAME ctrlr configuration can be found at the BYOACWiki) for my friend’s Pelican X-Box arcade sticks (he has two of them). He uses X-Box to USB converters so he can use them with his computer. Even though I made it to use the X-Box Pelican arcade sticks, it may work with other X-Box via USB arcade controllers (for PC/MAME).

Ozma Wars Overlay

Ozma WarsI got bored and made a MAME .lay file (overlay) for the arcade game Ozma Wars. I based the colors on screenshots of the game in the arcade flyer for ‘SNK Original Games’, which I found at The Arcade Flyer Archive.

Ozma Wars artwork (overlay) file (752 bytes).

Music

Some of the songs I’ve written and performed over the years… Much of our music has explicit lyrics, so you are forewarned!

D-Street (2002; music: Chris and Erik, vocals: Chris) With Me on guitar and Erik D. on baritone. The whole song was done before I even started working on the lyrics… Funny thing, it’s kinda about a girl I used to go out with… shocking, huh? And yes, that’s me singing…

F# (2000; music: Erik and Chris, lyrics: Chris and Crystal, drums: Chris) One of our slower and nicer songs on our 2000 album, F***ed Up.

Quick5 (2000; music: Chris and Erik, vocals: Crystal and Erik, drums: Nate) Another rocker… this was really fun to record.

Big Band (1998; music: Chris and Erik [keyboards]) An instrumental from our demo CD, we don’t sound like this at all anymore.

You can hear more of my band’s music on the Beckament Band site.

Ask A Ninja: Omnibus

Just in case you have never seen ‘Ask A Ninja‘, I find these hilarious!

Moving!?!?!

I’ve been at my current job (I’m a medical lab tech) almost a year now (a few days from my 1 year anniversary). I was just offered a pretty good raise and promotion to move to our Phoenix, AZ lab. It’s much smaller than where I work now but I think it’s a pretty good deal, so I’m going to take it.

I’ll probably be moving in August, they are going to fly me out for a week and put me up so I can find somewhere to live. They are going to pay me for that (and get me a car to use) as well as pay for my move. I’m a little nervous about it as I’ve never moved for work before (I’ve been in Denver since the end of 1995), but I’m really looking forward to it too.

I know that I’ll miss all my friends (and family) in Denver, but hopefully we will all stay in touch! I talked to the guys in my band and we plan on continuing to write songs; Kevin and I will be able to send our tracks back and forth, so the band will live on.

Another Test Post

Test Image Since I just changed my blog to a new engine, I figured I should get used to the way it handles uploads, images, comments, etc…So here goes: a test post with very little content.

I figured this would be a good test picture, it is the score of our most recent McRugby match against RAGE (we won). They didn’t like the way we played the game and disconnected during the 2nd round, RAGE_Epi stayed in the server so we could report and confirm scores. Much respect to Epi for this.

The Black Scorpions don’t always make friends when playing MechWarrior, we play to win and often surprise other teams with our tactics.
