There is no substitute for using a 4-way joystick on older 4-way games like Pacman or Donkey Kong. But here is a substitute that might help until you get a real 4-way joystick for MAME.

This works with my MAME + MAMEUI setup and it probably works with every modern MAME version and setup, but I can’t be bothered to check at the moment…

Sadly, this only works with analog (49-way) joysticks, I have an X-Arcade Tankstick and I have been thinking of replacing the joysticks with Ultimarc Mag-Stik or Mag-Stik Plus joysticks so I can switch between 4 and 8 way settings easier (at the moment I have to take the bottom off the controller to switch).

I made a MAME ctrlr file (more info about the MAME ctrlr configuration can be found at the BYOACWiki) for my friend’s Pelican X-Box arcade sticks (he has two of them). He uses X-Box to USB converters so he can use them with his computer. Even though I made it to use the X-Box Pelican arcade sticks, it may work with other X-Box via USB arcade controllers (for PC/MAME).

I got bored and made a MAME .lay file (overlay) for the arcade game Ozma Wars. I based the colors on screenshots of the game in the arcade flyer for ‘SNK Original Games’, which I found at The Arcade Flyer Archive.
