MechWarrior 4: MercenariesMechWarrior 4: Mercenaries + MekPak 3.02b Setup

EDIT (5-28-2010): MekTek has released an updated version of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries (you can get it here), My updated install instructions are here.

BASIC INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: This will give you a good setup for online and (MWL) League play (accurate as of 4-2009).

NOTE: These instructions are now out of date (as of 5-2010) and pertain to the CD version of the game, MekTek has released an updated version of the game available for free here (use the MTX client to install MechWarrior 4). Updated install instructions are here!

There is a newer patch coming out soon… I am not sure if everyone will switch to it. Look for MekPak 4 from MekTek.

MechWarrior Lives

Well I have been waiting patiently for two MechWarrior mods (which take place in the BattleTech universe) for various games. Mechwarrior Living Legends is a total conversion mod for Crysis and MekTek’s upcoming (unofficial) MekPak 4 patch is for Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.

MechWarrior 4 Dedicated Server Crash

Mechwarrior 4 - ChalkdustMy dedicated MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries server (von Pilsner’s) crashed the other night. I don’t play much during the week, so I didn’t notice until I got a call from another player asking where the server went.

Fortunately the important stuff was recently backed up so I had to re-install and configure Windows and a few other programs and the server was back online within 24 hours. According to initial reports from other players it is running a lot more smoothly now, so perhaps it was a blessing in disguise… lol

49-way analog joysticks with MAME

Monkey DonkeyThere is no substitute for using a 4-way joystick on older 4-way games like Pacman or Donkey Kong. But here is a substitute that might help until you get a real 4-way joystick for MAME.

This works with my MAME + MAMEUI setup and it probably works with every modern MAME version and setup, but I can’t be bothered to check at the moment…

Sadly, this only works with analog (49-way) joysticks, I have an X-Arcade Tankstick and I have been thinking of replacing the joysticks with Ultimarc Mag-Stik or Mag-Stik Plus joysticks so I can switch between 4 and 8 way settings easier (at the moment I have to take the bottom off the controller to switch).

Download 49-way joystick configuration files (9.3 KB).

MAME ctrlr .cfg for Pelican Arcade Sticks

King of FightersI made a MAME ctrlr file (more info about the MAME ctrlr configuration can be found at the BYOACWiki) for my friend’s Pelican X-Box arcade sticks (he has two of them). He uses X-Box to USB converters so he can use them with his computer. Even though I made it to use the X-Box Pelican arcade sticks, it may work with other X-Box via USB arcade controllers (for PC/MAME).

Ozma Wars Overlay

Ozma WarsI got bored and made a MAME .lay file (overlay) for the arcade game Ozma Wars. I based the colors on screenshots of the game in the arcade flyer for ‘SNK Original Games’, which I found at The Arcade Flyer Archive.

Ozma Wars artwork (overlay) file (752 bytes).

title: Ozma Wars (set 1)
manufacturer: SNK
year: 1979
genre: Shooter
category: Shooter / Gallery

DOSBox, Aces, and Linux

I noticed (in my Acepage server logs) people searching for ‘Slowdown Red Baron 3D’ and ‘Red Baron DOSBox’. Never one to ignore a challenge, I added a link from that site to a slowdown utility for Windows called Throttle and wrote a tutorial on DOSBox and Red Baron (it’s in the ‘Patches, Utilities, and Texts’ section). Also, a tutorial on DOSBox and Aces of the Pacific (it’s in the ‘Utilities and Texts’ section).

So far only Linux DOSBox is explained, but I plan on adding a Windows version as soon as I can be bothered to boot to WinXP.

Next Update, Please…

OK, the blog works now (well at least on the one computer I tested it on). I doubt anyone is going to read this, but what the hell… and I promise I’ll update the site soon.

Kevin brought his digital camera to practice last week and we got a few new pics of us playing. He also lined up another gig for us soon (another private party, sorry). We have been so focused on recording that it will be fun to go play these songs live (especially the new ones), not just playing the same song over and over in the studio until you get the best performance. I think the quality of the recording and songwriting is the best work that I have ever been a part of and I can’t wait until it’s finished.
